The image is an unusual blend of photography and watercolor: I first painted these lilies, then placed the watercolor behind the actual lilies and photographed them together. I like the way the shadows of the real flowers fall on the watercolor and the viewer might not be able to tell where the real ones end and the painted ones begin.
A friend of mine had the idea to turn this image into a placemat and we spent a fun afternoon going around to different stores, querying shop owners which size border, what size placemats they liked best. I got them laminated and gave sets to my family for the holidays that year, and everyone urged me to make more and sell them.
