The sugar plantations of St John, US Virgin Islands are some of the most beautiful pieces of architecture, made of local coral and rock, surrounded by an encroaching tropical forest. While they are a monument to a hideous past, the strength of these structures is to me a symbol of the strength and beauty that endures despite our human flaws.
